Intequal had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and talk with the talented Sara López Segura, who originally comes from Madrid in Spain, and has been in the UK for 5 years.

  • Were you aware of apprenticeships being available in digital roles?

Sara explains that before starting her Digital Marketing Apprenticeship in 2019, she was finishing her university studies in audio & visual communication. Sara’s passion has always been graphic design and had taken several jobs such as retail but had found it extremely difficult to find a job in her chosen field around her area.

Sara admits that she was not aware of apprenticeships beforehand and that it was only by browsing online that she discovered a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship job advert. “I just came across a job offer on Indeed with an apprenticeship with what was going to be my current employer”, Sara explains, “I thought that this sounded like a really promising idea as I wanted to continue my studies – I was thinking about taking a master’s, but I really did need that income and it was just the best of both worlds really”.

Sara spoke openly about how she had always wanted to become a Digital Marketer, to help her become an all-rounded creative individual by adding many strings to her bow. She emphasised how discovering this Digital Marketing Apprenticeship with Intequal was the best decision she had ever made!

  • What was it that inspired you to want to do Digital Marketing & Design combined?

We asked Sara if the apprenticeship role she was doing included the graphic design she was so passionate to do, as well as meeting her expectations of including all things digital marketing, and if this apprenticeship allowed her to combine both skill sets, Sara explained “I found this role that was for a graphic designer and marketer on the side, but taking this digital marketing apprenticeship I thought yeah, this sounds like something I can already do and I’m happy to learn these other big parts of digital marketing and I just fell in love with it”.

Sara went on to tell us about the times she had to run big campaigns and advertising and that this is where her graphic design knowledge came into place, as she was confident enough to manage whole campaigns from idea right through to concept and the finished product.

Whilst speaking with Sara, you can really feel her passion and dedication when she talks about digital marketing, design, what she has learned and how this has fuelled her fire to want to keep learning and creating.

  • What would a typical day look like as a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship?

Is digital marketing about spending the day on social media? Do apprentices really get the exposure and freedom that they are promised? To find out, we asked Sara to give us a quick insight into what a normal day would look like for her. “I was lucky and really happy because my employer gave me all the time in the world to learn, take my time and figure out any ideas that came to mind. It was a new business, and the main campaign was about gaining brand awareness. I also started to learn how to animate, illustrate and create gifs. It all came from an idea, and I mentioned it to my manager who said: “go for it, take the time you need and develop that skill if you want to.”

Sara went on to mention that even though she was fortunate enough to have a lot of creative freedom and the backing of her manager – she also had to take into consideration objectives that had been set out initially and this helped form her ideas and creative development. Sara used her downtime and any other time that was not eating into her apprenticeship time to develop new skills to her already extensive skill set.

  • How did you find balancing your time for the apprenticeship alongside working full time with work commitments?

A common misconception with apprenticeships is how much time and commitment are involved. With a full-time job to do as well as undertaking apprenticeship responsibilities including sessions with your dedicated trainer and putting into practice what you learn on the job…this can sometimes seem very demanding and sometimes overwhelming. However, Sara delightfully describes her experience, “It was really nice because I don’t like working on the same thing and I don’t like routine. I need a break from time to time – so when I have been doing something really creative and having that time to sit down and study and do a little bit of writing for my apprenticeship course was a perfect balance for me”.

  • Can you describe the support you received throughout your programme, where did this come from and how did this help?

“A special mention to Mo! We just sat down and reviewed all the deadlines and the work that needed doing by which deadlines and I got on with it. He helped me a lot!”.

  • We had heard that you have landed your ‘dream job’ please tell us more!!

We were so excited to hear all about the dream job that Sara had recently obtained, and to be honest…Sara could not wait to tell us either! “I’m happy to talk about it, it was really great! I finished my apprenticeship in January this year (2021), and I had achieved a distinction which I was so ecstatic about!!! I took a month off to give myself a break and then in March I started my new current role. I have to say that they were really impressed with the portfolio that I had built from my apprenticeship. So, from all that freedom to create and all that time I had to learn develop the skills I really care about – that’s what helped me land my next role”.

  • Has the Digital Marketing Apprenticeship helped shaped your new role?

“My apprenticeship has helped me a lot in my current role because I am now a Digital Marketing & Graphic Co-ordinator, and I have come across a lot of activities that I had already seen in my apprenticeship. That makes me feel way more comfortable about my day-to-day tasks – and then other skills that I developed that don’t necessarily come into digital marketing like animation and graphic design are playing a big part in what I am doing in the role I am creating within my company – so I am really happy right now”.

Sara works for a digital marketing agency for science, healthcare, and engineering – and focuses on the internal marketing for the company. Sara also has clients that she speaks to and looks after who need social media help.

  • How did you feel upon finding out that you had been awarded a distinction?

Sara excitedly explains “It was the best feeling ever!” Sara added “hearing that all the challenging work that I had put in with me and Mo, I felt rewarded and felt like it was really worth it in the end.”

  • What have been your current highlights to date, what have you enjoyed most about learning or achieving within your Digital Marketing Apprenticeship?

Sara tells us, “I am enormously proud of all the ideas that I have produced – learning about digital marketing coupled with my graphic design abilities – creating gifs, and creating an account for my company that has a million views and shares right now – we created 3 accounts and collectively they have over 20 million shares and views, and I am so proud of that.”

This is a stellar achievement for Sara and a notable example of how digital marketing apprentices are coming onboard and bringing with them new ways of marketing, developing ideas, and implementing them into the business to achieve incredible results!

  • Will you look to continue your studies further now?

Sara shares with us “I am really happy with my current role, but I wouldn’t mind diving deeper into animation and furthering developing my career in that area. I don’t think I have learned all there is to learn in digital marketing as it’s constantly changing, so I wouldn’t mind spending time doing another course to keep updated”.

It is fantastic to hear about the support that Sara has behind her, as well as Sara’s passion to want to keep learning, expanding her skill sets and consistently striving to stay on trend and become the rounded creative individual she aspires to be! With a university course, digital marketing apprenticeship, and a new role as a Graphic Design & Social Media Co-Ordinator under her belt – there is no stopping, Sara Lopez Segura! – a true inspiration.
