Maciej or Mac to his friends and colleagues came to the UK in 2014 from Poland and was looking for a job in IT. He found one with Form IT.
Were you aware of apprenticeships being available in tech roles?
Mac was not aware of apprenticeships until the company he worked for, Form IT, suggested he apply for one. This was after Mac had been working for the company for approximately 1 year and so they were aware of his skills and experience.
What inspired you to choose a career in technology?
Mac has been fascinated by IT from an early age and he had built his own computer when he was 11! In fact, he is so interested in IT he doesn’t see his role as an IT Technician as a job but more as a hobby. Mac remembered what someone has said to him before, “If you truly love doing something make it your job.”
How did you feel in the early stages of your apprenticeship?
Mac was a little nervous at the start of the apprenticeship about finding a balance between work and learning. However, he really benefitted from the apprenticeship because he was able to apply what he had learnt back into the workplace immediately.
Can you describe the support you received throughout your programme, where did this come from and how did this help?
Initially, Mac had some difficulties with the apprenticeship but working with Jay Hinkley, Intequal’s Pathway Planner, Mac really started progress so much so that Mac was awarded a Distinction for his apprenticeship work!
Intequal’s Pathway Planners work very closely with the apprentices having regular Progress Reviews with both the apprentice and the apprentice’s line manager. If required, the Pathway Planner will provide additional support, so the apprentice achieves the best grade possible.
What have been your highlights to-date – what have you enjoyed most learning or achieving within ICT/Infrastructure Tech – projects/skills etc?
Mac’s highlight was working Jay, the Pathway Planner, because that’s when Mac saw the greatest improvement in his learning.
The apprenticeship really started to help when Mac was working with Microsoft Office 365 alongside MTA Networking and MTA Cloud giving him the confidence and knowledge to complete his tasks flawlessly. Also, his course gave him the knowledge and experience to work with servers, router and firewalls.
Another real benefit for Mac in completing the apprenticeship is that he just has more confidence. As he explains, “I was very shy in the beginning. I knew how to fix things but I would still ask. I got over this because I gained the confidence to achieve the customer satisfaction more easily and quickly.”
How has your role grown since completing your apprenticeship?
Mac has got involved in a number of projects after completing his apprenticeship including Azure Migrations from server to Cloud and managing the internal help desk software. He went onto to say, “It’s one thing to gain the knowledge but then relaying that knowledge to colleagues is also important.” Since completing his apprenticeship, Mac is a strong support for new colleagues.
How did your apprenticeship studies fit in with your job?
In the beginning Mac’s time management skills were poor but after 1 month he found the right balance between working and learning even though he works in a very busy environment. Part of this was due to working with Intequal’s Trainer. Mac states, “Definitely huge thanks to Gary Martyn, the teacher, for actually helping me with everything. He told me about the time management and what I should be doing.”
How supportive was your employer with your studies?
Mac gave lots of praise to his employer, Form IT, explaining, “I couldn’t have asked for a better employer. They were always happy to provide me with the support that I needed whenever I needed whether that was a 1 to 1 with a more experienced technician or whether that was more time for my apprenticeship.” Mac was grateful for the support from all of his colleagues.
What would you tell your 16 yr old self looking at career options?
Mac would definitely advise his 16-year-old self to look at apprenticeships. His view is that apprenticeships will get you into work more quickly as well give the knowledge you need for your chosen career. Mac said, “You get information that is important but when you work as well you gain the experience in order to excel so it’s a combination of both that makes you work and be good at what you do. This is why I will always recommend an apprenticeship to whoever will be starting in an IT role.”
Mac’s advice to aspiring apprentices
